Description
The Fender American Vintage ’54 Stratocaster Thin Skin is one of those Fender runs that gets considerably more interesting once you know what it actually is.
Produced in the USA as a special Factory Special Run for selected dealers, the idea was essentially to take the look and feel of an early Strat and loosen a couple of the historically correct specifications where doing so made the guitar nicer to live with.
The ash body wears a very thin nitrocellulose lacquer finish in Two-Colour Sunburst, while the one-piece maple neck uses Fender’s substantial ’54-style profile. Rather than the very curved vintage radius and tiny frets of an exact-period recreation, this version has a 9.5-inch radius and 21 Dunlop 6105 narrow-jumbo frets, which makes it considerably friendlier for modern playing while still feeling unmistakably like an old-school Strat.
The pickups are a set of Fender Custom Shop Fat ’50s single coils, controlled in the familiar Strat layout with master volume, two tone controls and five-way switching. Vintage-style tuners, an 8-hole single-ply guard and vintage synchronized tremolo keep the appearance firmly in the early-’50s camp.
That combination is really the appeal of these Thin Skin guitars. You get the simple look, ash body, maple neck and lightly finished feel of an early Strat without having to pretend that every specification Fender used in 1954 was automatically an improvement.
This example dates from 2007 and is exactly the sort of Strat that makes more sense once you pick it up than it does from a list of specifications.
