Description

This Gibson Les Paul Custom Special was made in the USA as part of Gibson’s short-lived 2017 S Series.

The S Series appeared during a period when Gibson was experimenting with lighter construction, simplified hardware and a more modern playing feel. The Les Paul Custom Special is one of the stranger results of that experiment, with a thinner flat-top body, forearm contour, improved upper-fret access and a straightforward control layout.

It was not retained in the range, and examples are becoming increasingly difficult to find.

The guitar has a solid mahogany body finished in a simple Wine Red, paired with a fixed maple neck and rosewood fingerboard. The headstock is stamped Made in USA and 2017 Model.

It is fitted with Gibson DS-C double-slug humbuckers, with a Rhythm DS-C in the neck position and a hotter Lead DS-C+ at the bridge. Controls consist of the usual master volume, master tone, and 3-position pickup selector, proof positive that Gibson while occasionally daring in the design approach know what works at the end of the day when it comes to controls. (shh don’t mention the Robot)

The adjustable wraparound bridge keeps the hardware simple while still allowing individual string intonation. The carved neck heel and body contour also make this a noticeably lighter and less traditional feeling Les Paul.

The guitar is in good used condition. It has been played but is not tatty, with a small bump, a couple of tiny marks and some fine surface scratches associated with normal use. Please examine the photographs carefully as they form part of the description.

It weighs 3.2 kg.

A rare, lightweight and genuinely unusual Gibson from a period when the company was trying something different.
